Don’t Be Left in the Smog: Signs That Your Emission System Needs Repair

How many people know that an emissions test is needed to register a vehicle? They need to learn more about the mission and exhaust system. The purpose of the emission system is to reduce the amount of toxic gasses released by your vehicle. Ultimately, the mission system is designed to keep your car from producing too much air pollution.

The Impact of Emissions on Your Vehicle’s Performance and Fuel Efficiency

The emission system begins with the exhaust manifold. Connected directly to the engine block, it collects gasses from the cylinder chambers and funnels them to a catalytic converter. A cracked manifold will make an engine louder and may cause problems with the catalytic converter. Inside the manifold are 2 Oxygen sensors. When a fuel/air mixture is wrong, the sensor sends a message to the engine to either decrease or increase the amount of fuel sent to the combustion chamber. The correct fuel-to-air mixture will keep your vehicle running at peak performance and make it more fuel-efficient. This means there’s less pollution from your vehicle, and you get better gas mileage. If you realize the vehicle’s gas mileage has suddenly dropped, have a mechanic check the oxygen sensors. The location of the catalytic converter is between the manifold and the muffler. The catalytic converter’s job is to change the gases your vehicle emits, turning them into carbon dioxide and water. As harmful gasses pass through the honeycomb of the catalytic converter, they are oxidized into harmless components. The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)valve opens and shuts a small portion of the exhaust back into the engine to reduce the temperature In the combustion chamber. The lower temperature burns more of the nitrogen oxide and reduces pollutants in the air. Suppose you notice any symptoms of emissions problems with your vehicle. In that case, it’s time to go to an authorized mechanic and have your emissions system repaired.
